El dÃa 15 de marzo la extensión más utilizada en Internet cumplió un cuarto de siglo. Concretamente ese dÃa se conmemoran 25 años del registro de symbolics.com, el primer dominio creado con esta extensión.
Unos meses antes del registro de este dominio, se habÃa aprobado el actual Sistema de Nombres de Dominio (DNS), que asocia las palabras con las direcciones IP que identifican a cualquier equipo conectado a Internet. A partir de ese momento, con la aprobación del DNS y el registro del primer dominio .com, Internet comenzó a expandirse entre particulares y empresas, más allá del ámbito académico y militar al que se habÃa restringido hasta ese momento.
Al dominio .com le siguieron los dominios .net, .org, .gov, .edu, .mil, .int y los dominios territoriales para los distintos paÃses. En el primer año, sólo se registraron seis dominios .com y no se alcanzarÃa el centenar hasta finales de 1987. Actualmente hay más de 85 millones de dominios .com registrados, de los cuales, cerca de millón y medio dirigen a páginas españolas.
Los dominios .com mueven mucho dinero, el más caro de la historia ha sido sex.com, que se vendió por 14 millones de dólares en 2006 y que de nuevo se pone a la venta este mismo mes a través de una subasta en una oficina de la firma de abogados Windels Marx Lane & Mittendorf en Nueva York con un precio de salida de un millón de dólares.

La principal herramienta va a ser el programa con el que vas crear el código HTML. Si tienes una sólida base de conocimientos del lenguaje HTML bastará con un simple editor de texto como puede ser el bloc de notas de windows o el editor Emacs en el caso de Linux. Desde hace tiempo Google viene con el tema y finalmente anunció en un post que la velocidad será uno más de los factores que influyen a la hora del posicionamiento de un sitio web. Lo primero es llevar un poco de tranquilidad ya que menos del 1% de las búsquedas se verán afectadas y retornarán resultados diferentes.
Como se comenta en el artÃculo este factor lo debemos tener en cuenta más por nuestros usuarios que por mejorar un poco el posicionamiento. Mientras menos tarde un usuario en encontrar lo que busca más satisfecho se sentirá.
¿Qué factores debo revisar?
Muchos son los puntos que pueden influir en la velocidad de un sitio pero podemos brindar una check list para comenzar con el trabajo:
- Compresión y unificación de los archivos CSS y Javascript.
- De estar disponibles cargar librerÃas desde CDN (Content Delivery Network), por ejemplo cargar jQuery desde CND de Google). vÃa @guilledhorno.
- Optimización de imágenes: bajar el peso y más importante aún es bajar la cantidad de imágenes. Se pueden utilizar técnicas como CSS Sprites por ejemplo.
- Código del lado del servidor: optimizar el código del lado del servidor para obtener mejores tiempos de respuesta.
- Uso de la caché: cuando el contenido lo permita utilizar sistemas de caché. Tener en cuenta las cabeceras para tipos de contenido como CSS, Javascript e imágenes.
- Optimización de base de datos: creación de Ãndices únicos e Ãndices de búsqueda.
- Una vez que está todo en orden de nuestro lado podemos buscar alternativas de alojamiento (hosting) más veloces.
